(Omaha, Nebraska) – The Nebraska Arts Council will host an opening reception for artists Jennifer Bockelman and Charley Friedman on Friday, May 5, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the Fred Simon Gallery. The exhibition will be on display until June 23.

About the Artists:
Located in Seward, Nebraska, Jennifer Bockelman addresses themes of power and cultural identity as filtered through language. She is interested in accidental juxtapositions and the stories we tell ourselves about ourselves. Simultaneously sincere and snarky, she is helpful yet unconstructive. Bockelman’s practice includes stitched works, drawings, impotent political gestures and performances.

Bockelman received an MFA from the University of Colorado, Boulder in sculpture. Her artwork has been shown at BMOCA in Boulder, Irontail Gallery in Denver, Zhou B Art Center in Chicago and various locations in Nebraska. She has completed residencies at Art Farm, the Kimmel Harding Nelson Center and most recently the Brashnar Creative Project in Skopje, Macedonia, in 2016.

Charley Friedman uses art to explore the absurd, tragic and contradictory nature of living that humor can uniquely portray from multiple yet equal tangents. Moving between sculpture, performance, photography and video, the most prevalent themes in his work reflect preoccupations with how individuals, nations and cultures form and transmit ideas and values.

Friedman is a Pollock-Krasner foundation grant recipient, Smack Mellon Hot Picks artist and two-time Rema Hort nominee. He has exhibited and performed at numerous galleries and institutions including PS1/MoMA, Queens Museum, Gallery Diet, Fabric Workshop, Volta NYC, Pulse Miami, Barbara Mathes Gallery, Jack Tilton Gallery and Lehman College. He has attended various residencies including MacDowell Colony, Fountain Head, Cooper Union and Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts. He has a Masters of Fine Arts from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston/Tufts University (1996) and the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture (1995).
