Nebraska Experience School Bus Grants (NESB)

The Nebraska Experience School Bus Grant program is an initiative that celebrates our sesquicentennial by providing 4th grade students studying Nebraska history with the opportunity to visit the State Capitol or another historically or culturally significant Nebraska site during the school year. Grants will provide funds for transportation expenses for field trips.

  • Nebraska accredited public or private schools
  • Nebraska-based nonprofits organizations serving home-school students ages 9-10 in Nebraska

  • Participation is limited to students enrolled in 4th grade during the school year and their teachers and chaperones.
  • The field trip must involve travel to the Nebraska State Capitol or another approved site that is relevant to the study of Nebraska history. For a list of these destinations, click below.
  • Travel expenses associated with student competitions and/or student performances, such as band festivals and choir or theater performances, are not eligible.
  • An individual school building may receive only one NESB grant during the school year for all of its 4th grade students. School districts with multiple elementary schools are encouraged to "bundle" multiple school buildings into one application.
  • All grant applications must be submitted via email by the district superintendent or designated representative.

Grant Amounts:
The following table determines the maximum allowable grant request per student based on distance from the school building to field trip destination. Distances should be calculated based on mileage one way from the school address to destination address

Distance from school to venue Maximum per student request
0-10 miles $8
11-75 miles $12
76-150 miles $18
over 150 miles $25

Distance from school to destination Maximum per student request Number of 4th graders Total grant request amount
7 miles $8 x 120 = $960
56 miles $12 x 45 = $540
92 miles $18 x 67 = $1,206
170 miles $25 x 33 = $825

Deadline to apply is the first of each month. Applications must be received at least four weeks prior to the start date of the field trip. Incomplete applications will be rejected.

How to Apply:

  • School buildings in districts with multiple elementary schools are encouraged to contract their central administration prior to submitting an application.
  • Each school must have proof of a confirmed reservation with one of the approved sites. A digital copy of this confirmation must accompany the application form.
  • Applications will be reviewed in the order they are received.
  • The program will close once all funds are awarded.

Notification and Payment:

  • Notification of receipt of the online grant application will be sent via email once the application has been successfully submitted.
  • Notification of funding will be provided via email within two weeks of receipt of the application, providing there are no errors or corrections.
  • Payment of the grant award will be made within 30 days after the date of the field trip. For applications that contain multiple field trips, payment will be made within 30 days of the date of the final field trip.
