Registration is now open!

POETRY OUT LOUD encourages the nation's youth to learn about great poetry through memorization and recitation. POL helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about their literary heritage. POL is a great way to bring poetry alive for both students and teachers.

2021-22 Updates:

  • Nebraska POL Semi-Final competitions will be conducted using video submissions of student recitations. 
  • Nebraska POL State Final competition will be held live and in-person.
  • National POL Final competition will be held live in Washington, DC.
  • Professional performing artists and poets will visit classrooms virtually.


October 15 School registration deadline
September – Early February Conduct in-school POL programs
February 9 Video submissions are due for the State Semi-Finals Competition
February 18 State finalists notified
February 28 Final poem selections from student champions are due for the State Finals Competition
March 13 State Finals will be held live and in-person at the Sheldon Museum of Art
April 25 - 27 National Finals, Washington, DC

  • Students compete for a free trip to Washington DC and over $50,000 in scholarships and prizes.
  • POL meets many Nebraska ELA and Theatre standards, as well as NCTE standards.

  • Virtual artist coaching sessions by professional performing artists and poets free of charge.
