Event Description:

Whether we work in two or three dimensions with paints, photographs, found objects, clay, fiber or trash, we’ll explore the meaning of collage together in a group of invited artists celebrating and expanding upon ideas of collage during May 2024.

What makes a piece of artwork a collage? Many artists consider it a deconstruction of existing work or pieces of ephemera — using forgotten, abandoned and discarded papers and objects. The practice of taking these scraps of bits and bobs and reconstructing them into something meaningful is one way to describe collage.

Definitions for collage will vary for each of the artists participating in this show. We invite the public to consider questions with us during the month-long exhibit that exclusively showcases collage artists. We’re eager to celebrate artists from across the state, to connect and explore the possibilities this variable approach offers, and to see what new combinations result.

opening reception: 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday, May 4, 2024

World Collage Day, May 11

Created in 2018 by the Kolaj Institute and celebrated on the second Saturday of May, World Collage Day unites artists around the world. On May 11, we’ll connect beyond political, religious or personal beliefs in a space where artists and visitors can celebrate 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the 2nd floor community studio at Hot Shops Art Center, 1301 Nicholas St. Bring scissors, paper, ephemera, a glue stick or nothing at all. We’ll supply what you need to make a collage.

We encourage collage artists from all areas of Nebraska to participate in World Collage Day.

Closing reception: 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday, May 26, 2024.
