Event Description:

Join us on June 20 from 5:30-7:00 p.m. for a special event, “Weaving Together Our Common Threads: Juneteenth Reflections.” Accomplished artists Chawne Kimber and Celeste Butler will discuss their quiltmaking, life experiences and hopes for the future.

Originally from Frankfort, Kentucky, Kimber is a textile artist who stitches quilts and embroidery. Her work has been acquired by the Petrucci Family Foundation, Michigan State University, the International Quilt Museum and the Smithsonian Museum of American Art. When not manipulating cotton, Chawne is a provost and a professor of mathematics at a small liberal arts school in southern California.

Butler is an Omaha-based textile artist with an affinity for quilting and storytelling. Her work has been featured in the Washington Post, We Don’t Coast and Omaha Inspired Living. She has led workshops at the National African American Quilt Convention in Lawrence, Kansas, and taught at Metropolitan Community College in Omaha. See Butler’s upcoming solo exhibition on July 12 at The Union for Contemporary Art in Omaha.
